What's in a Name?

Updated: Sep 17, 2019

Here is one of my favorite photos of my mom, Jinx Scribner - age 68 – at my brother’s wedding. Believe it or not, she’s not wearing stockings – those are bare legs!

Arizona Author, Arizona Writer, Woman Writer, Alzheimer Memoir, Self Help Book

I’m often asked, “How did she get the nickname of “Jinx?” Well, it was a simple little story mom loved to share; the day a school chum unknowingly bestowed it upon her. According to legend, the young man jokingly announced to her and their fellow classmates, “Josie is a jinx! I always have bad luck whenever she’s around!” The rest is history. With one silly, off-the-cuff proclamation, from that day forward, and for the remainder of her life (even the sign on her nursing home room said Jinx Scribner), Josephine would be known as “Jinx.” The fellow’s words also led to her sincere, lifelong belief that the number thirteen - associated with the bad luck superstition - brought her good fortune.
